FdnF works for the empowerment of disfavoured populations in rural and urban areas of Africa, Latin America and Asia by direct intervention which is respectful of the traditions and culture of the beneficiary population. FdnF supports projects by solicitation only. Local governments recognize these projects but are not involved in their implementation.
Its small and streamlined infrastructure as well as a volunteer staff (with the exception of one part-time secretary) allows for efficient intervention and low administrative expenses (approximately 6%).
Our Association is made of 6 regional committees (Bern, Freiburg, Geneva, Neuchatel, Valais and Vaud) and a Secretariat. The representatives of these groups constitute the Executive Board which meets 4 times a year to decide on projects to be financed by the Association . Committees are to find resources to finance the projects. The Secretariat is responsible for accounts and proper management of funds according to the statutes of the Association. The General Assembly is held each year in June.
The Project Team, which is designated by the Secretariat, is to study new requests, follow current projects by reading and questioning reports and by occasional visits to project sites. Projects financed by the Association are either in the hands of a "Northern" NGO which is responsible for the follow-up, or it is a project from a "Southern" association or NGO, in which case the follow-up is done by the Project team.

In 1965, André Marquiset, a Frenchman working for an association called “Petits Frères des Pauvres” founded “Frères des Hommes”, an international organization whose Swiss branch was “Frères de nos Frères”, both apolitical and non-denominational. Following its initial emergency aid to victims of the severe draught conditions in India in 1965 and 1966, FdnF has geared its activities more and more towards sustainable development in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The first president of the Association was Jacqueline Palthey who was then succeeded by Frank Roulet. In 1979, FdnF spun off from Frères des Hommes and became an independent association under the presidency of Professor Gilbert Etienne. In 2003, Lillian Chavan succeeded Professor Etienne who remains FdnF’s chief development advisor.
