though only 70 km NE of New Delhi, the whole area has remained rural and fairly backward, with many landless families living in deep poverty. The Indian NGO SMMI is the only NGO in the area and runs a program in health, hygiene and some professional training, targeting young women in 24 villages around the dispensary they run in Muradnagar. The project is supervised for us by the local Order of Malta.
