Doctors for rural areas

Project description

N° of project:192 D
Country:Mali (Africa)
Place:
Domains:Health
Starting date:12/06/2001
Beneficiaries:10 to 15000 people per doctor
PartnersSANTE SUD

The aim of the project is to give rural populations a better access to higher quality medical care.
96 doctors are already active in this project. which started in 1989.

The project helps young doctors find work by settling in rural areas. The applicant has to define the needs of the selected community and make a feasibility study over a period of 3 months. Once his plan is approved, the program supports him by providing him with the essentials (small lab equipment, refrigerator for vaccines, motorcycle to visit patients out in the bush , etc...). The doctor joins the network of Sante Sud, which allows him to meet up with other doctors facing similar situations, and this provides him with annual training sessions.

The real beneficiairies are the rural population, who get a better access to health- both preventive and curative- through the availability of a trained doctor in their community.

Finally the program offers training to over 250 health workers in the government health centres.

2005-06 contribution: 12'000 CHF
